While I have never been aware of it referred to as footprinting, I knew what he was discussing and think that that talks to the confusion regarding footprints associated with Search engine optimization. In my mind, footprints in Search engine optimization come down to 2 major groupings, so let’s discuss them now and break them into two admittedly crude categories: good footprints and bad footprints.

Google may use a “footprint” to tie several web pages or sites together in their mind even when it’s not explicitly obvious. Obviously link-building will be the basis of SEO for SEOers, but Google likes all links to be natural or quite simply not built but earned.
Therefore, those who build links and who definitely are inside the know try to disguise and camouflage those links that they can build to make them appear natural in a a few different ways. Footprints are handy for finding similar sites generally speaking.
